Many towns have their own legends, so it shouldn’t surprise you that at University of South Carolina in Columbia there’s a little-known legend that is almost 70 years old. This legend involves a silver man with a third eye on his forehead.
Under the University, there are many steam tunnels, which is where the third eye man is said to be lurking. The first sighting of the monster was documented by Christopher Nichols in 1949 when he was a student at the University. Nichols claims that he and his friend saw a silver man entering the tunnels in front of the Longstreet Theatre on the night of November 12, 1949.
Then, in April 1950 while on patrol near the Longstreet Theatre, a university police officer encountered the creature, which is now referred to as the Third Eye Man. The officer said he discovered the silver man huddled over mutilated chicken parts. When the officer shined his flashlight on the man he could see a third eye right in the middle of his forehead. By the time backup arrived, the man had made his way into the system of the tunnels.
The University of South Carolina says that there’s nothing down the tunnels and also wants students to remember that no one is allowed in the tunnels. So, before you decide to investigate for yourself, remember it’s not only illegal, but potentially dangerous.
Is there a silver man with a third eye hanging out in the tunnels underneath the University of South Carolina? We may never know the truth behind this legend.
